Location and transport

Winterthur is an ideal base for those who travel a lot. The city center of Zurich and Zurich airport – with daily flights to all five continents – are both no more than twenty minutes away.  Germany, France and Austria can be reached by road and rail in about an hour, and Italy in a little over three hours. The public transport network is excellent, with hundreds of express, interurban and regional trains stopping in Winterthur every day and a comprehensive bus network connecting all parts of the city.

Airport/ Railway
Winterthur is perfectly linked to the big wide world. Zurich airport can be reached in just 15 minutes by train – with over 100 direct trains connections a day – and in around 20 minutes by car. Intercity trains to all major Swiss cities leave every half hour. There is a direct train to Munich. Over 800 interurban and regional trains call at one of Winterthur’s railway stations every day, and at weekends, trains to and from Zurich run throughout the night.

Car
Those travelling by car from Winterthur have easy access to the national motorway system (four access points around the city). In the immediate vicinity, there are over 1,400 public parking spaces available. Some parking houses also provide special sectors just for women. If you have no car of your own, you can become a member of the Mobility Car-Sharing organization, which has vehicles located at over 30 sites around the town.

Bicycle city
Winterthur has received several awards for its numerous and secure cycle paths. The most important routes are signalled by special bicycle signposts. The tightly-woven bicycle network is equipped with specific traffic lights, lane markings and mirrors, which also enhances the security of children cycling to school. In all, the bicycle network covers around 175 kilometers, over a third of which is completely separated from motorized traffic. A special city map for cyclists is available showing all bike trail connections, just as bicycle signposts indicate the best ways round town for cyclists. The more than 3,500 bicycle parking spaces in the city center are a sign of how popular this means of transport is among Winterthur’s inhabitants. Bikes can also be rented at Winterthur’s main railway station.

Bus network
The tightly-woven bus network spreads to all corners of the town. The first busses leave at 5:30 a.m., the last ones run at around 0:30 at night. Low-lying platforms enable easy access for disabled persons. A special museum bus runs from the main station to the Oskar Reinhart museum, the Am Römerholz collection and back again on an hourly basis.

Note: During the construction of the main bus station in Winterthur (July 2012 until probably June 2013) the temporary bus stops are here.

Footpaths
There is a network of footpaths and hiking trails connecting Winterthur’s districts and leading into the surrounding hills and forests.
